NAME: Jodie Fryatt JOB TITLE: Veterinary Surgeon
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: Three
TODAY'S ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: GCSEs, A-levels,work experience in vets/kennels/farms etc.
BEST AND WORST BITS ABOUT THE JOB: Best: Rewarding, every day is different. Worst: Long hours.
WHAT I WISH I'D BEEN TOLD BEFORE I STARTED: Lots of work at university, long hours (most lectures 9-5) and a lot of work experience to do in holiday time.
HOW DO I SEE THE JOB EVOLVING? For me it will mean specialising in a particular field.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS: It is hard work but if science, biology, animals and people interest you, it is worth it.
NAME: Rachel West JOB TITLE: Veterinary Nurse
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 12
TODAY'S ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: 5 GCSEs grades A-C, including maths and English. Animal care course (one year) if you do not have enough GCSEs before you start your NVQ course.
BEST AND WORST BITS ABOUT THE JOB: Best: Rewarding building relationships with owners and pets. Worst :Involves lots of cleaning and mess! And it can be long hours.
WHAT I WISH I'D BEEN TOLD BEFORE I STARTED: There is a lot of paper work included. You have to do a portfolio etc whiet training.
HOW DO I SEE THE JOB EVOLVING? Can go on to specialise in surgery,exotics etc.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS: Best advice is to get as much experience with animals and vets as you can, for example, voluntary work on Saturday mornings, cleaning etc. Training requires you to be employed by a training practice. Can be completed as a unversity degree.
