NAME: Ray Waters JOB TITLE: Project manager
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 20 plus
TODAY'S ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: HNC. Through a trade, working, for example, as a carpenter, or training scheme through college.
BEST AND WORST BITS ABOUT THE JOB: Best - Get pleasure from building and seeing completion of a job. Worst - Hours (they can be unsociable)
WHAT I WISH I'D BEEN TOLD BEFORE I STARTED: Nothing
HOW DO I SEE THE JOB EVOLVING? From a personal point of view, as far as I want to go.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS: You have to find your own level of management skill.
NAME: Mark Suggitt JOB TITLE: Builder/Developer
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 27.
TODAY'S ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: OND/HNC in building or general trade experience.
BEST AND WORST BITS ABOUT THE JOB: Best - very rewarding, customer satisfaction. Worst- Building: Working in the winter. Developing: Amount of money required and changing market.
WHAT I WISH I'D BEEN TOLD BEFORE I STARTED: Building - for young people, it really needs to be a vocation. Developing - ask yourself whether you are a gambling person.
HOW DO I SEE THE JOB EVOLVING? Would like to expand the business; would also like to take on more of a management role as I'm now older and woild like to be less hands on.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS: You can see the product of your hard work. To reiterate, it is a very rewarding job, particularly owing to customer satisfaction.
NAME: Gareth Mepham JOB TITLE: Carpenter
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: Five.
BEST AND WORST BITS ABOUT THE JOB: Best - sense of achievement. Worst - splinters!
WHAT I WISH I'D BEEN TOLD BEFORE I STARTED: The need to be better at maths.
HOW DO I SEE THE JOB EVOLVING? From apprentice to boss/site manager.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS: Don't panic if you don't have good GCSE's. There's something out there for everyone.

TODAY'S ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Foundation Plumbing at College. Fast track Gas course with previous experience.
BEST AND WORST BITS ABOUT THE JOB: Best - Meeting customers. Different challenges. Worst - The dirty jobs.
WHAT I WISH I'D BEEN TOLD BEFORE I STARTED: Nothing.
HOW DO I SEE THE JOB EVOLVING? More RED TAPE!
ANY OTHER COMMENTS: Being self-employed makes it difficult to compete with, for example, British Gas.
