NAME: Michael Lannie JOB TITLE: Product Designer

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 25
TODAY'S ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Industrial or product design qualification.
BEST AND WORST BITS ABOUT THE JOB: The best parts are - the variety of products you work on! From children's toys to medical devices! Working with inventors and companies allows us to meet a wide range of people. Worst parts - struggling to complete a prototype when the client is due in the next day!
WHAT I WISH I'D BEEN TOLD BEFORE I STARTED: That there are so many ways you could use your design qualification. Also, your final year project can determine you first job and, therefore, your career path.
HOW DO I SEE THE JOB EVOLVING? Having my own business now, the job develops as I want in the way I want to steer the company. Innovation is the key area where the UK can become a strong manufacturing and innovative force in the world. Product design will the one of the best careers to go into.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS: There are some key colleges and universities now that offer design courses so if you are thinking of going into design, look at a range of them and speak to working designers. Remember, you will still have to draw to do not rely on CAD packages.

NAME: Philip Ridley JOB TITLE: Vehicle Technician
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: Three.
TODAY'S ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: None. I sent a letter and CV to all local garages.
BEST AND WORST BITS ABOUT THE JOB: Best - Learning a trade whilst earning money; doing a job I enjoy. Worst - Starting pay poor when an apprentice.
WHAT I WISH I'D BEEN TOLD BEFORE I STARTED: Nothing.
HOW DO I SEE THE JOB EVOLVING? Gain more experience and eventually become MOT Tester and Master Technician.
