NAME: E Allen JOB TITLE: Make-up artist
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 20 years plus.
TODAY'S ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Various. A good all-round education and artistic skills.
BEST AND WORST BITS ABOUT THE JOB: Worst - Unsociable hours, too many graduates chasing too few jobs.
WHAT I WISH I'D BEEN TOLD BEFORE I STARTED: Long hours on set ,waiting for performances to end.
HOW DO I SEE THE JOB EVOLVING? For me, it's to become a top designer.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS: There is plenty of work as a local make-up artist (brides etc). Getting into medical work. It helps if you know someone already in the industry.
NAME: Sue JOB TITLE: Mobile Beauty Therapist
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 15
TODAY'S ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Relevant qualifications at FE college. There are various levels of diploma. Mine was two years' full-time to qualify. You can add to this if you want to specialise, eg Advanced Skin Care Treatments.
BEST AND WORST BITS ABOUT THE JOB: Best - it's fun, very sociable and you meet new people. I like the flexibility of being mobile. Worst - arriving on someone's doorstep when they've forgotten you are coming! Travelling is "dead" time and the money isn't always great as part-time and mobile. Flexibility comes at a price.
WHAT I WISH I'D BEEN TOLD BEFORE I STARTED: Nothing comes to mind.
HOW DO I SEE THE JOB EVOLVING? Always plenty of scope to develop, if you are willing and able to pay for extra courses.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS: Work in a salon once you have qualified, before deciding to become mobile. You will gain experience and have a regular salary.
NAME: Jo Slater JOB TITLE: Self-employed Hairdresser
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 32
TODAY'S ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: I started as a full-time apprentice at a salon and I attended college one day per week over a two year period. It may be different now; it is worth researching college courses.
BEST AND WORST BITS ABOUT THE JOB: Best - satisfied, confident and happy clients. It is nice working from home, as I can be flexible and manage my own hours. Worst - none. There may be some if I worked in a salon. I can very much choose my clients.
WHAT I WISH I'D BEEN TOLD BEFORE I STARTED: Nothing
HOW DO I SEE THE JOB EVOLVING? For me, it will stay the same. Over the years I have completed training courses, eg new cutting techniques. There will always be the need for hairdressers. There will always be an element of vanity in people. Men appear to show more of an interest in their hair.

NAME: E Allen JOB TITLE: Posticheur 'wig maker'
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 20
TODAY'S ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: May not be required, or hairdresser and/or make-up artist.
BEST AND WORST BITS ABOUT THE JOB: Best - Theatrical work : It can be elaborate and imaginative. Day wear work: Good to return someone's identity.
WHAT I WISH I'D BEEN TOLD BEFORE I STARTED: It is tedious in construction. There is monotony in in-depth weaving. You can get eyestrain and backach ! Working behind the Stage/TV/Film you have to keep wig and face/body postiche in top condition.
HOW DO I SEE THE JOB EVOLVING? Specialist employment/skills.
