NAME: Victoria Collins JOB TITLE: Cupcake maker
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: One
TODAY'S ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Mainly personal experience and I always been motivated to have my own business. I now run my own company, which bakes and sells cupcakes. I did need to gain key skills, for example, health and hygiene qualifications, which can be acquired at local colleges.
BEST AND WORST BITS ABOUT THE JOB: Working for myself means I can control my own work and time, which is great. The downside would be completeing all the paperwork myself too.
WHAT I WISH I'D BEEN TOLD BEFORE I STARTED: I did work in an office previously. If I hadn't I would have found the process of setting up my own business more tricky. So nothing I wish I'd been told before I started.
HOW DO I SEE THE JOB EVOLVING? From my point of view, it will be catering for more events and businesses.

NAME: Debbie Ralley JOB TITLE: Receptionist
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: Two and a half
TODAY'S ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: For me, it was who I knew.
BEST AND WORST BITS ABOUT THE JOB: Best - variety of tasks, meeting and greeting a variety of people and helping them with whatever they require. Worst - nothing!
WHAT I WISH I'D BEEN TOLD BEFORE I STARTED: How busy some days can be.
HOW DO I SEE THE JOB EVOLVING? Reception work doesn't really evolve. Personally, I'd quite like to train and teach.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS: You need to like people to enjoy the job.

NAME: Rose Vincent JOB TITLE: Secretary/Receptionist
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 5 years and 9 months
TODAY'S ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Typing skills, computer skills and a sense of humour!
BEST AND WORST BITS ABOUT THE JOB: Best - various duties, meeting people, rewarding (ie happy customers!). Worst - can be very busy (that's also a good thing), dealing with the occasional bad-tempered customer/patient.
WHAT I WISH I'D BEEN TOLD BEFORE I STARTED: Nothing.
HOW DO I SEE THE JOB EVOLVING? I do not envisage a lot of change, other than the clinic becoming busier.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS: The role can be repetitive but a sense of achievement is attained by seeing how the clinic benefits so many people.
NAME: Nicola Prettyjohns JOB TITLE: Owner of Delicious Catering
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: One.
TODAY'S ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Inspection from the Local Environmental Health, Level 2 certificate in Food Health and Hygiene. Some training in catering establishments would be useful, drive and passion are a must.
BEST AND WORST BITS ABOUT THE JOB: Best part of the job is customer satisfaction, seeing your cakes on their wedding photos or special events, hearing feed back on a job well done. Meeting lots of new people and going to some amazing venues are definite highlights. The worst part is the hours! They are unpredictable and very long. You have to put in a lot of hours and some days you have to work on only a few hours sleep, but with hard work and determination it is all so worth it.
WHAT I WISH I'D BEEN TOLD BEFORE I STARTED: Budget. The first few months with start-up costs and advertising can be very expensive, set yourself up with a business plan, decide what you can and cannot afford. Very few people are an overnight success but with hard work, passion and a quality product you will make it and the feeling of success is a fantastic one.
HOW DO I SEE THE JOB EVOLVING? The sky is the limit when you own your own business, the only thing stopping you is you. Think big, but start off small, don't bite off more than you can chew. Learn as you go along and write down and learn from your mistakes and always ask for feed back.
