NAME: Andrew Williams JOB TITLE: Director, Preference Trusts
and Wills Limited
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: I have run my own practice specialising in wills, trusts and powers of attorney for more than five years and have 20 years' experience in financial services.
TODAY'S ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Maths and English GCSE Grade C+ are essential and Law, Business Studies, Business Management at GCSE or A Level would be helpful. Self-regulatory bodies such as The Society of Will Writers and Estate Practitioners, Institute of Professional Will Writers, Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners and the Law Society can offer skills and knowledge training, professional qualifications, forums and support services. ILEX offer exam courses which allow you to learn as your business grows. You can ask to shadow someone already working in this field and there are possible internships and work experience.
BEST AND WORST BITS ABOUT THE JOB: Most pleasing aspects: Being recommended to clients; building long-term professional relationships; making a real difference through advice, guidance and solutions; working flexible hours and creating own objectives and disciplines.
Most challenging aspects are: Having no excuses (it's down to me); working hard (always); never being complacent; always seeking new knowledge and skills; self-discipline; rejection.
WHAT I WISH I'D BEEN TOLD BEFORE I STARTED: Shop around for professional indemnity insurance; the variety and choice of the self-regulatory bodies, exam bodies and distance learning courses; the best document drafting software to use.
HOW DO I SEE THE JOB EVOLVING? More and more people are losing assets to pay for care costs, being disinherited because of parents' re-marriage, paying unnecessary taxes and receiving poor standards of social care. We can help resolve all these issues but more regulation is on the way which will raise the bar for many in our field. Entry costs will increase and opportunities reduce. The next ten years represent the best years to enter.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS: Join a local business networking group, seek out mutual business referral relationships with complimentary service providers, be wary of unprofitable marketing methods. Your consultancy should grow by referral to be successful.
