NAME: Roger Lacey JOB TITLE: Journalist
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 43
TODAY'S ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: When I started you needed only GCE O-levels to get a job on a newspaper. These days employers tend to be looking for graduates. The essential place to check on current requirements is the National Council for the Training of Journalists, www.nctj.com
BEST AND WORST BITS ABOUT THE JOB: Best - working on genuine news exclusives, especially as a reporting team. Worst - having to deal with the celebrity culture and agents.
WHAT I WISH I'D BEEN TOLD BEFORE I STARTED: It will wreck your social life.
HOW DO I SEE THE JOB EVOLVING? A lot of people say newspapers have had their day, but I think they will survive in some shape or form for a few more years. Online news services are seen as the future but nobody has really worked out how to make them pay. Broadcast news will continue to influence the industry, particularly with the proliferation of 24-hour TV news channels.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS: Working in a news environment is not for the faint-hearted. It's very demanding. If you want a more civilised life, head for magazines or feature work.
